An Ongoing Commitment to Teaching & Learning Excellence 

Departmental faculty and staff regularly upgrade their teaching and subject area skills through professional memberships, activities in professional societies and participation in local and national workshops such as the National Science Teachers Association , the Society for College Science Teaching , the National Association of Teachers of Mathematics , the National Wellness Association and the American College of Sports Medicine. 

Faculty and Staff from the Department of Natural Sciences,  Engineering, Health & Wellness have frequently been honored for their ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. 

Recent honors include: 

• Endowed Teaching Chair three year awards for outstanding teaching at Miami-Dade Community College to: Dr. Guillermina Damas, Chris Migliaccio,  Don Maser and Edwin Gines-Candelaria.
• State of Florida Board of Education, Postsecondary Education Planning Commission Exemplary Math/Science Program Award for PSC 1515 - Energy in the Natural Environment (to Arnold Fleisch, Don Maser, and Chris Migliaccio)
• National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) awards from the University of Texas Community College Leadership Program for Excellence in Teaching to Dr. Guillermina Damas, Chris Migliaccio and Don Maser.
• State of Florida Department of Education, Sharing Success in Environmental Education "Program of Accomplishment" for utilizing classroom and lab technology as well as service learning in teaching PSC 1515-Energy in the Natural Environment (to Arnold Fleisch, Don Maser and Chris Migliaccio)
• National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year and nomination to the Hall of Fame to Ilida Medero.
• Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company Partners in Technology Award for "Ecoverde:Problem Solving in the Modern World" multimedia project (to Chris Migliaccio and Dr. Gail Hawks, MDCC/Wolfson Center for Economics Education)
• University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences' FG Walton Smith Award for Outstanding PhD. Dissertation to Dr. Tony Barros
• Florida Association of Community Colleges Excellence in Curriculum & Instruction Awards for the projects: "Towards a Sustainable Society: Managing the Rainforest" to Chris Migliaccio and "Service-Learning in Environmental Education" to Donald Maser 
• Excellence Awards (given annually to the top 7% of MDCC professional and support staff to Ileana Baldizon, Arnold Fleisch and Consuelo Fumero.
