Welcome
to the MDCC Center for Economic Education, the nation's first Center for
Economic Education established at a community college. MDCC's Center for
Economic Education is affiliated with the Florida Council on Economic Education
and the National Council on Economic Education.
THE MDCC CENTER FOR ECONOMIC EDUCATION
The Center for Economic Education, housed at the
Wolfson Campus of Miami-Dade Community College, was created in 1987 through a
grant from the Florida Council on Economic Education www.fcee.org.
Commencing operation in August of that same year, the Center is the first one
that has been established nationally at a community college.
The Center at the Wolfson Campus in Miami maintains an active affiliation
with the Florida Council on Economic Education, as one of its eight statewide
programs. In addition, the Center is one of 250 centers belonging to the
National Council of Economic Education www.nationalcouncil.org.
The Center is charged to serve the schools, both public and private, in Dade
and Monroe Counties, and to work cooperatively with other Centers as the need
arises.
The services of the Center include:
- Coordinating nationally organized programs, i.e. the Stock Market Game,
the FED Challenge etc.
- Providing economic education information to school administrators and
teachers.
- Disseminating materials on State and National Awards Programs; and
providing assistance to teachers and school personnel on "how to" complete
these forms. Also assisting in generating ideas for projects.
- Serving as a curriculum specialist in the area of economic education for
kindergarten-12th grade.
- Developing and promoting economic education credit-generating programs
which serve for teacher recertification requirements.
- Organizing workshops on special topics in the area of economic
education.
- Communicating with teachers regarding their individual needs in economic
education.
- Serving as a source of audio-visual materials.

Center Course Offerings : For Certified Florida
Educators
Each, of the following 3 hrs. Credit courses, is valid towards teacher
recertification and is TUITION FREE with textbooks and materials also
provided at NO COST. Each course is a semester course meeting once a week
during the semester it is offered, except for ECO 2000.
ECO 2000 meets daily for two weeks, from the end of Miami-Dade County Public
School's (MDCPS) regular school year to the beginning of its summer school
session.
TUITION FREE COURSES ARE DESCRIBED BELOW DURING THE
COLLEGE TERM THEY ARE OFFERED EACH YEAR: Each course requires a $25.00
non-refundable application-processing fee
SUMMER TERM: (Immediately following the close of MDCPS regular school
year, and meeting daily for two weeks, from 8:30am to 4:00pm)
ECO 2000: The Economic Impact of Miami-Dade County

This course serves as a basic survey of economic principles. Scarcity,
choice, entrepreneurship, markets, prices, monetary and fiscal policies,
employment, inflation, international trade and socio-economic concerns, all
studied through a first-hand tour of Miami-Dade businesses. Teachers are
required to have their own transportation to and from site visitations.
FALL TERM: (These courses meet once a week for a semester or four
week ends)
ECO 2071: Economics Institute for Elementary Teachers - Micro

This course is designed for Elementary Teachers. It provides coverage of
major MICRO economic concepts and their infusion into the K-5 curriculum through
an activity oriented approach. This course will include those concepts mandated
by both the Florida Sunshine Standards and the MDCPS Competency Based Curriculum
(CBC’s). Scarcity, needs and wants, consumer, producer, factors of production,
supply and demand, investments, and stocks are just a few of the concepts
covered. All materials and demonstrated activities are specifically designed for
the Elementary classroom. Textbooks and materials are provided for free.
ECO 2073: Economics Institute for Secondary Teachers -
Micro
This course is designed for Secondary Teachers. It provides coverage of
major MICRO economic concepts and their infusion into the 6-12 curriculum
through an activity oriented approach. This course will include those concepts
mandated by both the Florida Sunshine Standards and the MDCPS Competency Based
Curriculum (CBC’s). Scarcity, opportunity costs, production possibility, supply
and demand, price, markets, business organizations and stock markets are just a
few of the concepts covered. All materials and demonstrated activities are
specifically designed for the Secondary classroom. Textbooks and materials are
provided for free.
WINTER TERM: (These courses meet once a week or four
weeks ends)
ECO 2072: Economics Institute for Secondary Teachers -
Macro
This course is designed for Elementary Teachers. It provides coverage of
the major MACRO economic concepts and their infusion into the K-5 curriculum
through an activity oriented approach. This course will include those concepts
mandated by both the Florida Sunshine Standards and the MDCPS Competency Based
Curriculum (CBC’s). Money and banking, taxation, international trade, are a few
of the concepts covered. All materials and demonstrated activities are
specifically designed for the Elementary classroom. Textbooks and materials are
provided for free.
ECO 2074: Economics Institute for Secondary Teachers -
Macro
This course is designed for Secondary Teachers. It provides coverage of
the major MACRO economic concepts and their infusion into the 6-12 curriculum
through an activity oriented approach. This course will include those concepts
mandated by the Florida Sunshine Standards and the MDCPS Competency Based
Curriculum (CBC’s). Gross Domestic Product, Budget and Deficits/Surpluses,
Monetary and Fiscal Policies, and International Trade and Finance will be a few
of the concepts covered. All materials and demonstrated activities are
specifically designed for the Secondary classroom. Textbooks and materials are
provided for free.

CENTER SPECIAL NON-COURSE ANNUAL
OFFERINGS:
The Stock Market Situation:
This activity is offered each Fall and Winter semesters to students grades
4-12. The Stock Market Situation http://www.smg2000.org/ provides student
teams with $100,000. to invest in the New York Stock Exchange, the American
Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. The simulation lasts for 10 weeks, with winners
announced in regional and statewide competitions. New teacher advisors for this
activity are required to attend a two and a half-hours workshop on rules, common
errors to omit, and recommended opportunities. Teachers register either through
the Miami-Herald Newspaper-In-Education program or with the Florida Council on
Economic Education Stock Market Coordinator. The Stock Market Game can be played
either through the Internet or by a fax transaction format for schools who are

The Free Enterprise Bank Program:
The Free Enterprise Bank Program is available to any K-12 educator who wishes
to develop the concepts of business enterprise and bank loan responsibilites
with their students. The loan is for REAL money and is required to be repaid
with interest during the school year. Loans are granted by the Florida Council
on Economic Education Loan Committee, based on the one-page application filed by
a teacher on behalf of their class. This program was piloted in Miami-Dade
County and now has expanded throughout the state. For more information call

Awards/Special Recognition
The Governor’s State Award Program:

This yearly state award program has two categories in which teachers may
enter in one of five levels. The two categories are "Traditional" and
"Innovation" categories. The Traditional category allows teachers to develop
units, which demonstrate the integration of economics into their curriculum.
These units usually cover a minimum of two weeks to longer, and are limited to
50 pages. The Innovation category describes a one or two day lesson plan.
Each category awards prizes: The Traditional program has first, second,
third, and honorable mention for the following levels: K-3; 4-6; 7-9; 10-12; and
Open (which covers special programs, i.e. learning disabled, physical education,
or multi-grade level presentations for gifted). The Innovation program also has
prizes. The award ceremony is held in Orlando at the Grand Floridian Hotel in

Special Center Programs
1. In January, "The Economic Demise of the Soviet
Union" sponsored by the Foundation for Teaching Economics and
coordinated by the Florida Council on Economic Education and the MDCC Center for
Economic Education will provide an evening program for middle and high school social
studies teachers. PRE-REGISTRATION is mandatory, since seating and materials are
limited for this program. Call 305-237-3233 for details and registration
materials.
2. The MDCC Center for Economic Education
will present in February, "Personal Finances for Elementary
Students". This all-day program will be held on the Wolfson Campus and will
provide elementary teachers with an overview of concepts and materials
appropriate for their K-5 curriculum to develop Personal Financial
wisdom for their students. Lunch will be provided, as well as, substitute
coverage. Pre-registration is required, and the presentation is limited to 30
K-5 teachers. Call 305-237-3233 for information and registration.
3 . In March, "Focus: International
Economics" sponsored by the National and Florida Councils on Economic
Education, and presented by the MDCC Center for Economic Education will be
given. This evening
program requires advanced registration, and is available to middle and senior
high social studies teachers. Materials will be provided. Call 305-237-3233

4. During April, "The Environment and The
Economy" sponsored by the Foundation for Teaching Economics and The
Florida Council on Economic Education will be held in Tampa. Room and board are covered for this program designed to
