Responsibilities and how I deal with them
How do I deal with those responsibilities? How many hours per week do they take to complete? There are many responsibilities that come along with being the VP of Service. Along with our Executive Board meetings and mandatory office hours, I plan, coordinate and attend every service activity PTK-AGK participates in. Along with those responsibilities, I must also choose which service organizations PTK-AGK works with. It is my duty to contact them, meet with their volunteer coordinator, and come up with a service calendar that best suites everyone's needs. When choosing a service organization to work with, I must also take into consideration how that organization has made a positive and lasting effect in my community, Miami. Coming into this VP position, I knew I wanted to work closely with people who have done so much for the greater good of Miami and its inhabitants. That is why I am proud and honored to be working closely with two amazing service groups: Service for Peace and Camillus House. In total, I spend close to 13 hours per week taking care of my VP responsibilities.
How do I manage my time to be part of the Board and to be a student? I do not find it difficult to manage my time as a student at MDC and as a Board member. I have both written and electronic organizers. Having my duties committed to word really helps me stay focused. I check my planner several times a day to make sure I'm on task. It helps immensely to have my meetings, class time, office hours, study time, service activities and work hours in my organizer. I need only to peek into my planner to know how my day is going to be and how to best prepare for it. Without my organizer, I'd be absolutely lost and confused!
What has been the most challenging experience in PTK?
I'd have to say the
Parliamentary style our Board meetings are ran. There are times I
want to steam role ahead with plans I get very excited about, but I
cannot due to our style of meetings. I must first bring a motion to
the table and get a majority vote. We only hold meetings once a week,
on Fridays, so it can be very frustrating having to wait before I can
proceed with my activity, plan or idea.
Before joining PTK,
I was in the mindset of "Go to class, do my course work, get it done,
get an A." Because I was overly focused on my classes, I somewhat
isolated myself from the rest of my classmates. I didn't have any
friends, or acquaintances for that matter, on campus. After joining
PTK, I opened up more. I began to attend the meetings and become
involved in the service, fundraising and fellowship activities. It
was through PTK I made my first true "college friends." Now when I
walk around campus, I see familiar and friendly faces. PTK has
changed my college experience for the better.
Also, as the VP of
Service, I know I am doing some good to help those less fortunate than
I am. Whether I'm working in the Camillus House dinning room, or
planting a garden at the Hope Center, I am making a positive
contribution to Miami, and I have PTK to thank for that.
Why should someone become a PTK member?
The reasons are
endless!! Along with the academic recognition, there are many
scholarship opportunities, the chance to make amazing friends and the
ability to better our own lives and the lives of those around us.
Advice to future VP of Service...
Organize, organize,
organize!! I cannot stress this point enough. Without some kind of
organization system, any future VP will be lost. PTK has so many
activities to participate in, meetings to attend, and school events to
partake in, it all needs to be written down and planned for. A
detailed organizer is one of my pillars of success.
