In order to achieve student success the GEAR UP project has planned and implemented a six-week academic summer program for a group of entering high school freshmen-year students. The summer program will be implemented during the summer of 2013. The academic component for this summer program was created to provide students with an intensive course work, and the opportunity to engage in classroom discussions, lectures, and demonstrations, in Math, Language Art, Leadership and science, in order to provide them with a taste of college life. Also, the students will participate in workshops, field trips, special projects, and will have guest speaker presentations. At the end of the summer program all the students that successfully complete the program received certificates of completion and rewards for they performance. Also, all students will receive a backpack filled with materials and school supplies.
