Research involving students, faculty, or staff at Miami Dade College (MDC) requires prior authorization.
At MDC, approval of research applications is a two-step process: First, MDC's Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews research applications involving human subjects. Once approved by MDC’s IRB, research applications are reviewed by the College Academic and Student Support Council (CASSC) Research & Testing Committee.
Researchers should allow for 6–8 weeks for application reviews. Data collection may not begin until the researcher receives notification that his or her application has been approved by MDC’s IRB and the CASSC Research & Testing Committee.

Note: Schedule subject to change
Researchers should compile all required documentation prior to submission. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Change of Research Application
Changes to research applications that have been previously approved must be reviewed prior to implementation of changes.
Research Design and Methodology Technical Assistance
Upon request, the Office of Institutional Research (IR) provides technical assistance regarding research design, methodology, and feasibility prior to submission of research applications. To request a consultation, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note that technical assistance provided by IR staff does not constitute review and approval by MDC’s IRB and CASSC Research & Testing Committee.
Human Subjects Research Training
Research applications must include documentation that the Principal and Co-Investigators have successfully completed training in the responsible conduct of research. Completion of one of the following training courses satisfies this requirement.
- Protection of Human Subjects Training Request Form
This training is provided free to MDC employees and students who need certification as a requirement of coursework, grant work, or any other College-related assignment pertaining to the CASSC Research and Testing Committee, Data Liaisons, or Institutional Review Board (IRB).
- Protecting Human Research Participants Online Training (fees apply)
- CITI Program Social-Behavioral-Educational (SBE) Basic Course (fees apply)
In addition, the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) offers a variety of free online trainings for the research community on human research protections based on the principles of the Belmont Report and the requirements of the revised Common Rule (or 2018 Requirements).
