The Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College will give developing and seasoned writers an opportunity to tweak their talents by working with experienced authors and publishing pros at the Writers Institute in May.

The Writers Institute offers aspiring authors and lovers of the written word creative writing workshops, readings and great publishing advice.

Writers of all kind are provided with the opportunity to perfect their craft during three- or four-day workshops taught by respected authors.

If you have already written your own perfect novel, the institute includes opportunities for meeting with independent, professional editors and literary agents.

The following authors are confirmed to teach workshops this year: Esmeralda Santiago on memoir writing, Chitra Divakaruni on revision of fiction and nonfiction, Steve Almond on short story writing, Percival Everett on fiction, Mark Doty on poetry, Lynne Barrett on plot, and Pete Collins on research techniques for fiction and nonfiction.

In addition to the institute, the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at MDC presents year-round programs and events open to all, including readings, free children’s story time and affordable eight-week writing workshops.

The Center’s most visible endeavor is the highly acclaimed Miami Book Fair International, the nation’s top annual literary event. It also encompasses Prometeo Theatre, a community theater with the mission of preserving Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
