Sixth Annual Sister Cities Art Exhibition Opens at the Tower Theater with an Array of Art from International Artists

Miami, September 15, 2008 - The Sixth Annual Miami-Dade Celebrates the Art of its Sister Cities, will open its doors on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 with a formal reception at the Tower Theater, where a deserving Miami Dade College (MDC) student will be awarded a $1,000 Sister Cities scholarship.

“As MDC and Sister Cities celebrate an outstanding six year partnership of presenting the Art Exhibition and Seminar Series, we acknowledge the significant value of promoting and showcasing the arts in our community”,  said Malou C. Harrison, North Campus Dean of Students and member of the Sister Cities Coordinating Council.

The exhibition, titled “Celebrating our Diversity,” will be on display for public viewing until Tuesday, October 7, at the Tower Theater, which is located at 1508 S.W. 8 St., Miami. The art exhibition is open Monday through Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 4 to 7 p.m. Metered parking is free after 6 p.m. during weekdays and all day on weekends.

As part of the month-long celebration, several special events are scheduled to take place. These include the Opening Night Reception and Presentation of Artists on Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. An “Evening of Music and Café” to be held in conjunction with Viernes Culturales de la Calle Ocho (Cultural Fridays on Eighth Street) on Sept. 26, from 7 – 11 p.m. In addition, an art seminar titled “The importance of Art to the Social Growth of a Community” will occur on October 1, at 7 p.m. and will be presented by renowned arts critic, author, and MDC North Campus Arts and Philosophy Department Chair, Octavio Roca.  The Closing Reception and Silent Auction, "Celebrating the Music and Culture of Brazil,” will take place on Oct. 7, from 7 – 9 p.m.
 
Hailing from all over the world, some of this year's participating international artists are from Colombia, Italy, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil and Germany. Cuban-born artist George Rodez’ artwork was selected for the official poster for this 6th Anniversary celebration of the arts.
 
“I would like to encourage the community to come and enjoy these wonderful pieces of art,” said Norma Amaro, Sister Cities Arts Committee Chair. “A cultural exchange like this one strengthens the cultural relations between people and communities.”
