Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater Debuts New Latin American Films

Scene from Memories of Overdevelopment

Miami, June 1, 2011 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater continues its exclusive movie lineup with the U.S. premieres of two films – Of Love and Other Demons (Del amor y otros demonios) and Made Up Memories (Mentiras Piadosas) – based on written works by literary giants Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Julio Cortazar.

The Tower Theater will also present the Miami premiere of Memories of Overdevelopment (Memorias del desarollo), in collaboration with the New England Festival of Ibero-American Cinema. This Cuban film was also inspired by the work of a successful author, Cuba’s Edmundo Desnoes. The film’s director, Miguel Coyula, will be present for the opening at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, and will participate in a question-and-answer session.

Of Love and Other Demons (Del amor y otros demonios) , directed by Costa Rican filmmaker Hilda Hidalgo, is the story of an impossible love between a young woman condemned by the church and the priest who tries to save her soul. The film will play at the theater June 3 - 16.

Made Up Memories (Mentiras piadosas) is Argentine filmmaker Diego Sabanes’ first feature-length film. It tells the story of a family that, after the disappearance of a son, begins writing false letters and sending gifts to console the heartbroken mother. Please check the Tower Theater website for dates.

Tickets for Memories of Overdevelopment are $10 general admission. All other films are $8 for the general public, $7 for students, seniors and members of the Miami Film Society.
