Miami Book Fair International Fosters Generation Genius – Literacy and Learning for Children and Teens

Miami, October 31, 2012 - With a goal of fostering literacy within the community and rearing the next generation of engaged world citizens, The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College has consolidated its reading, writing, theater, and other learning programs for children and teens under one banner – Generation Genius. This year’s Miami Book Fair International, a component of the Center @ MDC, will incorporate this new initiative and engage thousands of young minds through the celebrated Children’s Alley, author presentations, live theater and other performances, and more!  


The fun begins with a rare appearance by bestselling children’s author, Lemony Snicket, best known for his A Series of Unfortunate Events books, at 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 12. Snicket will present and sign copies of the first book in his new series, All the Wrong Questions: Who Could That Be at This Hour? Nov. 12 is a federal holiday and most schools are closed. Free tickets for this event will be available at the Book Fair website starting Nov. 5.


On Sunday, Nov. 18, at noon, megaselling author James Patterson will echo the Generation Genius philosophy with a talk and Q&A about his life and work, emphasizing the importance of reading. Free tickets for this family event are also required and will be available starting Nov. 5. Patterson will sign and discuss his books for adults as well as his books for children.


This year, the Book Fair will host Miami-Dade and Broward County school children for TWO days! Teachers and parents can bring little ones, tweens and teens for free on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Featured authors include Sherri Winston on President of the Whole Fifth Grade; Caldecott-winner Avi, author of Sophia’s War and Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, authors of the series Beautiful Creatures, which is being made into a movie, among many others. Stohl and Garcia will be joined by the stars of the upcoming movie for a special event. These and other authors for the under-18 set will also present books and participate in Q&A’s during the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17 and 18.


At Children’s Alley, six all-new pop-up venues will teach children how to make art, experiment with science, play in a band, make healthy choices, and explore diverse cultures. The Once Upon a Time…stage will feature puppets, music, dancing, and more. Storytellers and authors from around the world will dazzle kids at the …Happily Ever After stage. And at the Act Now Theatre!, imagination takes center stage with theater performances for children in English and Spanish. All stages will have live entertainment Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 15 – 18.

The 29th edition of the Book Fair, the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, will take place November 11 – 18, 2012, at Miami Dade MDC’s Wolfson Campus, 300 NE Second Ave., in downtown Miami. The always-popular Street Fair runs Friday through Sunday, November 16 – 18, with more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere.
