Miami, April 23, 2013 - National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chair Joan Shigekawa announced today that Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts program has been selected to receive a NEA Art Works grant to support its 2013-2014 performance series.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have the support of the NEA to bolster our work,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. “Funding of this nature is critical to the work we do with artists, students and the community and we are extremely grateful to be chosen as an awardee.”

MDC Live Arts has a celebrated history of bringing exceptional national and international performing artists to the region. Annually, it produces a diverse series presenting today's most exciting artists while creating meaningful encounters between these artists, MDC students and the community at large through workshops and residency activities.

In August 2012, the NEA received 1,547 eligible applications for Art Works grants requesting more than $80 million in funding. Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts. The 817 NEA grants total $26.3 million and span 13 artistic disciplines and fields. Applications were reviewed by panels of outside experts convened by NEA staff and each project was judged on its artistic excellence and artistic merit. MDC Live Arts’ NEA grant is in the amount of $45,000.

"The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support these exciting and diverse arts projects that will take place throughout the United States,” Shigekawa said. “Whether it is through a focus on education, engagement, or innovation, these projects all contribute to vibrant communities and memorable opportunities for the public to engage with the arts."

Miami Dade College is proud to be the home of MDC Live Arts – an initiative of MDC’s Cultural Affairs Department created in 1990 as Cultura del Lobo. It seeks artists from around the globe who push boundaries, honor traditions relevant to our multi-cultural community, and introduce voices from beyond the region.
