MDC’s Tower Theatre to Present Cuban Film, Pablo, May 16

A Scene from "Pablo"

Miami, May 2, 2013 - Miami Dade College ’s (MDC) Tower Theatre will host the Miami premiere of the Cuban film, Pablo, Thursday, May 16, at 9:15 p.m. The film is a disturbing look into domestic violence, prostitution, and drugs, on the island.

The first release by Yosmani Acosta, Pablo tells the story of the melancholic life of a child who, after losing his mother and maternal grandmother, has no other choice but to live with his abusive father who forces the young boy to commit crimes to earn his living.

The film not only details the horror Pablo, the protagonist, must endure at home, but goes beyond that to emphasize the indifference of the authorities whose function it is to protect children from abuse: from the teacher that reprimands her students, to the neighbors who are witnesses to the cruelty, to the criminal networks that act freely without authority crackdowns.

Pablo is the first, full-length fiction movie to be filmed within the Cuban city of Camagüey, and to be produced using local artists. It premiered at last year’s International Festival of New Latin-American Cinema, in Havana, after the organizers saw themselves forced to screen the film, given the popularity and curiosity these never-before-seen themes in Cuban cinematography generated.

Pablo’s director, Yosmani Acosta, will participate in a Q&A, after the movie’s screening. This film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
