Miami Dade College to Host a Conversation with Cuban Priest Father Jose Conrado July 18

Padre Conrado L

Miami, July 10, 2013 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Arts & Philosophy Department at Wolfson Campus will host The Challenges of the Catholic Church in Cuba: a Conversation with Father Jose Conrado, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18. A part of its Wolfson Focus on the Humanities Series, the conversation is presented in collaboration with MDC’s Center for Latin American & Caribbean Initiatives (CLACI). The event will be conducted in Spanish, and is free and open to the public.

Known for his outspokenness against the Cuban dictatorship and the Catholic Church’s hierarchy, Father Conrado wrote a public letter to Fidel Castro in 1994 blaming him for Cuba’s failing economy, and urged him to open dialogue with dissidents, and hold fair, open elections. In 2009, he sent a follow-up letter to Raul Castro calling for the end to increasing threats and interrogations against his parishioners, and the island’s Soviet-styled political model.

Father Conrado was recently assigned to a new parish in Cienfuegos from Santiago de Cuba not out of punishment, he confirmed, but because his Santa Teresita del Niño Jesus church was damaged during Hurricane Sandy. The Cuban priest was also given a one-year leave from his pastoral duties to write a book and give lectures on the history of the image of Our Lady of Charity (Cuba’s patron saint), in the El Cobre Basilica.

MDC continues to provide a platform for thought-provoking discussions. The college has recently hosted a number of internationally renowned Cuban dissidents including blogger/independent journalist Yoani Sanchez, three members of the Ladies in White, Antonio Rodiles, Eliecer Avila, Manuel Cuesta Morua, Leonardo Calvo, Juan Madrazo, Wendy Iriepa and Ignacio Estrada Cepero.
