Miami, August 8, 2013 - Film Florida, a not-for-profit corporation whose purpose is to promote the creation of jobs in the film and entertainment production industries and to stimulate economic development and tourism, recently held its quarterly meeting at Miami Dade College’s North Campus Science Complex and its newly renovated Lehman Theatre.Officials representing all facets of the film and television production industries, including education, digital media, economic development, and tourism and hospitality, presented their areas of expertise to a panel of state legislators to brief them on the importance of restoring consistent, long-term tax credits to the existing Florida Production Incentive Program.

Dr. José A. Vicente, president of the North Campus welcomed the attendees.“How appropriate that Film Florida has chosen the North Campus to hold its Legislative Workshop and Forum since this is where the School of Entertainment & Design Technology’s (SEDT) state-of-the-art facilities are located,” said Vicente, referring to the new Sound Recording Studio equipped with the SSL Duality Console and Foley Stage for film and television sound effects recording, and to the Motion Picture Screening Room with High Definition projection and 5.1 Surround Sound.“It is our expectation that these talented and professionally trained students have the opportunity to find gainful employment right here in the state of Florida… their home,” he added.

Barry Gordon, the Director of MDC’s School of Entertainment & Design Technology spoke about the important role that education in film and television production plays in the success and sustainability of a local production industry. “The School of Entertainment & Design Technology at Miami Dade College provides the very best hands-on education using the latest state-of-the-art equipment and facilities,” said Gordon. “Graduates of the baccalaureate and associate degree programs in film, television and digital production have been trained with the skills necessary to succeed in this highly competitive industry.”

In addition to the film and television production programs, the School of Entertainment & Design Technology offers degree programs in music business, graphic and web design, digital photography, and computer arts animation.

Prior to the event, legislators were given a tour of SEDT’s facilities including the High Definition, 100% digital format TV studio where students are taught studio broadcast operations and record programming for the College’s television network, MDC-TV. Students, faculty and staff attended the workshops and forum to show their support for Florida’s Film Incentive Program. If the state’s entertainment industry continues to grow, students will not have to leave Florida to find rewarding careers.
