Miami Dade College to Launch MDCulture with An Evening of Theatre, Film Screenings, Art, Live Jazz and the Book Fair’s 2013 Poster Unveiling, Sept. 20
Miami, September 9, 2013 -
Miami Dade College (MDC)’s acclaimed Cultural Affairs Department, a prominent community institution for more than 50 years, is celebrating its new launch as MDCulture with a fun, stimulating arts and culture showcase from 5 - 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at the College’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower in downtown Miami.
Held in conjunction with the city’s DWNTWN Arts Days, the event, titled “ACTIVATE: MDCulture,” will begin with a special toast to the College’s various cultural programs and continue with a smorgasbord of film screenings, an art exhibition, a theatre performance at the College’s acclaimed Prometeo Theatre, and the highly anticipated unveiling of the official 2013 Miami Book Fair International (MBFI). There also will be an intimate performance by renowned Brazilian jazz pianist, André Mehmari, presented by MDC Live Arts. All events, with the exception of the theatre show at Prometeo, are free and open to the public!
For more than 50 years, MDC’s Department of Cultural Affairs has played a key role in Miami’s evolution from a sleepy tourist town into a vibrant international arts destination. MDCulture now represents the College’s cultural and arts programming including The Center for Literature & Theatre, MDC Live Arts, Miami Book Fair International (MBFI), Teatro Prometeo, Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), and MDC Museum of Art + Design (MOAD).

2013 MBFI Poster Unveilings
As this year’s Book Fair celebrates the arts and literature of Spain, the artist of the official Book Fair poster is one of Spain’s most important illustrators and comics artists and winner of the 2007 Premio Nacional de Comic, Francisco Capdevila, better known as “Max.” The Book Fair’s Generation Genius Days poster was designed by popular comics and graphic novels creator Paul Pope.
swing/SPACE/Miami, art exhibition presented by MOAD
A special reception will be held to inaugurate MOAD’s new exhibition series featuring the work of distinguished Miami Dade College & New World School of the Arts
swing/SPACE/miami features five solo or group exhibitions per year in a dedicated gallery space at the College’s flagship institution for the presentation of visual arts.
Film Screenings, presented by MIFF
Screening of two award-winning short films from the MIFF 2012 program. Miami filmmakers, Juan Carlos Zaldivar and Anja Marias’ “Shift” (Animation, 5 min) had its world premiere at MIFF 2012 and has since gone on to screen at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner, and is now part of MOCA’s Optic Nerve permanent collection. Zaldivar will be in attendance at the MIFF open house and introduce the film. Also screening will be French filmmaker Cédric Prévost’s “Catharsis” (Drama, 18 min), winner of MIFF’s 2012 Grand Jury Short Film Award.

Theatre Show “Cyrano mío” presented by Prometeo, 8:30 p.m.
Prometeo Theatre (Wolfson Campus, Building 1, 1st floor)
Directed by Joann Yarrow and Cristina Rebull, “Cyrano Mío” centers on Roxana who loved a Christian whose soul was borrowed from someone else, and she sought God in an effort to find comfort, but it was Cyrano who kept her alive, almost happy, with his fidelity and protection. Every moment of Roxana’s memories is tinged with regret that she was unable to appreciate his sublime love. In Spanish with English supertitles. Tickets are $20.
DWNTWN Arts Days promotes culture and aids a more cohesive Downtown arts and culture community. It is a program designed to bring together and promote cultural institutions as well as facilitate and incentivize art exhibitions and cultural events, with the intention of linking culture and business.
