Miami, September 17, 2013 - Serving hundreds of students through Project ACE, an accelerated English program, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus (IAC) recently received the prestigious Innovation of the Year Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College. The Campus won the award in the category of Learning and Teaching.

The college’s Project Accelerated Content-Based English (Project ACE) was funded by a Title V grant from the U.S. Department of Education from 2008-2013 to provide an accelerated English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program for English-language learners who have strong academic backgrounds. The program was developed by conducting research on the academic and linguistic demands found in general education coursework in order to help students acquire academic English more efficiently.

The goal is to equip students with the language skills they need to continue their education or advance in the workforce. Students enrolled in Project ACE courses earn general education credits that count toward their respective degrees while they are completing their EAP classes.

“This award is validation of the very special faculty, staff, and administrators who worked on this project and continue to forge ahead with new strategies that move students toward graduation and their careers,” said Dr. Carol Tulikangas, IAC Dean of Academic Affairs.

Project ACE classes will continue to be offered at the InterAmerican and Wolfson campuses of MDC.
