Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus’ Academic Support Center Building Earns LEED Gold Certification

Miami, October 21, 2013 - The new Academic Support Center (Building R) at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus has received a LEED Green Building Certification of Gold (LEED BD&C 2009 Gold). LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings and verifies the building is operating exactly the way it was designed to.

The Academic Support Center building, which opened in January, houses all student services departments and School of Business faculty offices, as well as several classrooms and meeting and training rooms.

“Our students and staff are enjoying the new building,” said Kendall Campus President Dr. Lourdes Oroza. “The beautiful architecture has been admired and recognized by various entities, and we are proud to receive this award. The Academic Support Center has allowed us to introduce new technology and overall cost savings to the campus.”

LEED is a point-based system where building projects earn LEED points for satisfying specific green building criteria. LEED certified projects blend environmental, economic and occupant-oriented performance.  They cost less to operate and maintain; are energy and water efficient; and are healthier and safer for their occupants.

In August, The Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects also recognized the building’s excellent construction by presenting architects Perkins + Will with the 2013 Honor Award of Excellence for New Work for their design.
