Miami Dade College’s Homestead Campus to Host “Poland in the Shadow of Auschwitz” Discussion for Holocaust Education Week, Jan. 9


Miami, December 19, 2013 - Now in its sixth year as a partner with Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, the Miami Dade College (MDC) Holocaust and Genocide Education Program (HGEP) at the Homestead Campus will present “Poland in the Shadow of Auschwitz at 9:50 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 9. The presentation is part of the Holocaust Memorial’s annual Holocaust Education Week.

Poland in the Shadow of Auschwitz will feature visiting Polish scholar Katarzyna Suszkiewicz, a Ph.D. candidate at the Jagiellonian University Center for Holocaust Studies in Krakow, Poland. She is the also facilitating the creation of a summer study abroad program in conjunction with the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS) and MDC.

Additionally, the Holocaust Education Week presentation will focus on 1,000 years of Jewish-Polish history and Poland’s coming to terms with the Holocaust. In line with the Center for Holocaust Studies’ mission to build an understanding of the Holocaust, the presentation will describe the changes in commemoration and memorialization that are taking place in Poland.

“One of the strengths of the Holocaust and Genocide Education Program is its emphasis on presenting an international perspective of history to our students and the community,” said Dr. Jeanne Jacobs, Homestead Campus president.

As of this year, there have been more than 10,000 attendees to HGEP events and activities.
