Miami Dade College’s North Campus Hosts National TRIO Day Feb. 22

Miami, February 19, 2014 - Miami Dade College’s(MDC) North Campus and the South Florida TRIO Advisory Council will host the 2014 National TRIO Day Celebration and Expo, Saturday, Feb. 22. The event, celebrating its 49th anniversary, will include a college expo and educational workshops to prepare students and parents for college, as well as scholarship and financial aid opportunities.

The annual expo, celebrated nationwide the last Saturday of February, will also host a panel discussion by TRIO alumni who will share insights and experiences of how the program has contributed to their success. Students and program staff from MDC, College Summit, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Florida Memorial University, and the Miami Museum of Science will also be present.

“TRIO Day presents a prime opportunity to come together as a community around educational opportunity and attainment, while impressing upon our youth the growing value of a postsecondary education,” said Malou C. Harrison, North Campus president. “We’re pleased to have North Campus serve as the host partner for an educational collaborative of this caliber.”

Established by Congress to help low-income students get into college, graduate, and integrate in America's economic and social life, the TRIO Programs include seven initiatives, and are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. MDC’s current and prospective students can benefit from a series of TRIO Programs including Student Support Services, Upward Bound, and an Educational Opportunity Center. More than 800,000 underserved students at close to 1,400 colleges and universities nationwide are enrolled in TRIO’s various projects.
