Miami Dade College Offers ServSafe Certification to High School Culinary Students

MCI-ServSafe L

Miami, March 24, 2014 - Students at Miami Beach Senior High School are one step closer to fulfilling their culinary dreams thanks to Miami Dade College’s renowned Miami Culinary Institute (MCI). The MCI recently offered a group of students from the school’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism the opportunity to attend the ServSafe certification course in the state-of-the-art culinary lab at MCI.

“This ServSafe certification, mandated by the State of Florida for anyone involved in food service handling, gives these students an edge when applying for a job, and makes them more marketable in the workforce,” said Shelly Fano, the Hospitality Institute’s executive director.

Many of the ServSafe participants will likely become future MDC students and would continue to benefit from this partnership, with MDC possibly even providing financial aid to help them live up to their gastronomical goals.

The joint effort between the MDC and the Beach High’s Academy is just one example of years of partnership between the two entities. Fano, who also facilitated free books for the students, has been organizing visits, certification testing, and college counseling for years.
