Miami Dade College’s Hospitality Institute to Hold Community Job Readiness Training Program and Job Fair

As part of its commitment to providing hospitality and service skills training and job search resources, the Hospitality Institute at Miami Dade College (MDC) will once again host a four-day Hospitality Job Readiness Training Program and Job Fair April 1 – 4, 2014, at the Greater Bethel A.M.E Church in downtown Miami. There is no cost for the training and job fair, and it is open to residents of downtown Miami, Overtown, Liberty City, and other surrounding areas.
The training sessions begin on Tuesday April 1, and run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for Friday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Experts from the hospitality industry, MDC faculty and motivational speakers will lead the sessions and cover topics such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, customer service, dining etiquette, professional attire, basic computer skills, food safety training and food handler certification, financial literacy, life skills, and much more. All participants must dress in business attire each day.
The training program will end on Friday, April 4 with an awards ceremony at 9 am, followed by a job fair immediately after. The job fair will feature employers from the hospitality, service and other industries and is only open to participants who complete the workshops and Hospitality Institute alumni who have completed all three days of training; walk-ins will
be admitted. Alumni from previous Hospitality Institute programs also will have an opportunity to interview with the featured employers. Staff from the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, MDC and the Hospitality Institute will be available to assist with information on educational opportunities, including GED certification, admissions and enrollment, and available financial aid programs.
Participants will also have the opportunity to apply for the Basic Culinary Skills Training Program. This 12-week intensive training covers basic culinary skills. Classes will start in May, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at MDC’s Miami Culinary Institute. All applicants must complete the four-day HI training prior to applying and daily attendance in the Basic Culinary Skills Training is mandatory to obtain a Certificate of Completion. An application and GED/high school diploma are required to applying for screening and personal interview for this free-of-charge program.
Established in January 2007, the Hospitality Institute at the MDC operates under the umbrella of the Miami International Hospitality Center. The training and job-readiness programs are held four times throughout the year. The Hospitality Institute is currently funded by the City of Miami Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency, Hilton Worldwide, Carnival Cruise Lines, the Braman Foundation, and the American Association of Community Colleges Plus 50 Initiative.
