ZooMiami Spokesman

Miami, May 13, 2014 - Miami Dade College’s(MDC) North Campus will present a School of Science STEMversations with Ron Magill, communications director and goodwill ambassador for ZooMiami, at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 21 Magill’s presentation, “Conservation of the Harpy Eagle,” will share his experiences working in Panama to preserve the harpy eagle.

The destruction of South American rainforests, the natural habitat of these powerful birds of prey, has caused the species to become nearly extinct in much of Central America.  “It’s always an enriching experience to have Ron Magill visit with our students at North Campus.  His knowledge and refreshing insight truly stimulate the minds of our students to think outside of the box relative to conservation and sustainability issues,” stated North Campus President Malou C. Harrison.

Magill will discuss the role he and ZooMiami played in the effort to preserve this species through the design and creation of a state-of-the-art Harpy Eagle Center at Summit Zoo and Gardens, their efforts to have the Harpy Eagle declared Panama’s National bird, and their education and outreach efforts here in Florida.  Magill will be accompanied by one of ZooMiami’s birds of prey during his presentation.

This presentation will take place as part of the STEMversations Speaker Series sponsored by the US Department of Education STEM Ladder Grant.
