Miami, January 26, 2018 - School for Advanced Studies (SAS) held its inaugural "Poetry Out Loud" competition on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in the McCarthy Theater at MDC Kendall Campus. Twelve finalists representing all five campuses of SAS competed in the event and a winner for each campus was chosen by a panel of judges. The five winners will travel to USF in Tampa, Florida on March 10. 2018 for the statewide tournament.

Poetry Out Loud is a national organization which encourages high schools to hold performance competitions where students choose a great poem from their anthology of 900 poems, discuss it with their English teacher, memorize it, and recite it in front of an audience. The students brought a real dramatic flair to their performance poetry.

SAS AP English teachers Dr. Keisha McIntyre-McCullough and Ms. Cathy Conkling organized the contest and were strongly supported by SAS Principal Dr. Omar Monteagudo. The five winners were Noah Barquez-Arias (SAS West), Yael Sterenfeld (SAS Wolfson), Julianna McCaffrey (SAS Homestead), Daniel Tahoun (SAS Kendall), and Maria Hernandez (SAS North).
