Workshop: Dimensional Modeling Overview

Course ID - CTD0196b

Short Title: Dimensional Modeling

 Audience   All Employees
Length of Workshop:      7.5 hours

Dimensional modeling is a required skill for implementing Business Intelligence using an Enterprise Data Warehouse. Business Intelligence, or BI, is the process of gathering data and turning that data into information and knowledge that enables better decisions. An Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) is a repository of historical data that is optimized for reporting and analysis. As part of the college's strategic direction, IT is modernizing the Enterprise Information System (EIS) using state-of-the-art BI and EDW technologies. Participants will learn dimensional modeling techniques through a combination of lectures, interactive class discussion, independent exercises, and hands-on small group design workshops.

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  •  Describe the basic characteristics of fact and dimension tables
  •  Describe the 4-step process for tracking dimensional designs
  •  List the three fundamental types of fact tables
  •  Explain the importance of conformed dimensions and the data warehouse bus matrix
  •  Describe basic techniques for tracking attribute changes in dimension tables.
