Course ID - CTD0340
Short Title: Database Immersion
| Audience: |
All Faculty |
| Length
of Workshop: |
* 8 hours
- 4 hours face-to-face plus 4 hours online |
*Approved CT&D Workshop for Faculty Professional
Development hours.
Description:
The Internet has dramatically changed both the quality and quantity of
information students and faculty are able to access for college-level
study. Faculty may be extremely frustrated with the quality of information
students retrieve from the Internet and quote in their papers.
Faculty may also not be aware of the databases available to them, and
how to use them effectively. This workshop will provide an
opportunity for library and classroom faculty to collaborate to combine
database technology and subject content to produce challenging and
engaging assignments. Several databases will be featured and two
that are useful across disciplines will be explored in more depth for
use in assignments. Perhaps the most important benefit will be to
the students at MDC who will improve their information literacy skills
when they complete the assignments created by their professors at this
workshop! For an example of a similar program at the University of
Maryland, please see:

Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:
- Access, navigate, and retrieve
documents in databases such as Infotrac and Health & Wellness
Resource Center (these databases can be used in many disciplines.)
- Construct and post a
discipline-specific assignment that incorporates the use of a database
resource into an assignment
- Critique others' assignments using criteria
learned in workshop
- Use the new Florida Community College
LMS (Library management system) that came online 1/12/04
