Description:
Comprehensive tutor training applicable across all academic disciplines meets Level I certification standards for the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Topics include identifying the unique role of a tutor; understanding the learning process and connections with the tutoring cycle; learning how to create independent learners through specific skills and habits; and specific tutoring strategies and techniques including positive reinforcement, communication skills, listening skills, Socratic questioning, etc. 

This online workshop is part 1 of a 2-part training program; the following workshop will be conducted face-to-face. 

 
 
 Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of academic tutoring to the College and students
  • Describe how tutoring can be used not only as remediation, but as general academic support
  • Describe characteristics of our students, their academic needs, and how to best meet those needs in a supportive environment
  • List the advantages of working within a certified lab/support center
  • Provide support to other labs if needed
  • Explain professional responsibilities: professional dress code, accurate reporting of number of hours worked, proper emergency preparedness and procedures, professional relationship with students, and conflicts of interest
  • Explain when and how to refer students to other resources: the professor's office hours, the student's textbook, any multi-media equipment or tools available in the lab/center, Single-Stop, Learning Resources, Library, etc
  • Describe college initiatives and the role of the labs

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
