Workshop:  Active Learning in the Science Classroom *

Description: This workshop will provide faculty with the opportunity to implement active learning in the science classroom.  Faculty will reflect on their role in a learner-centered classroom and will make decisions to apply specific active learning strategies to their own science classes.  The attendees will experience an active learning environment as a student.  They will reflect on and discuss this experience.  They will explore a model of the classroom, and they will apply this model to a specific learning situation.

Faculty will be placed in teams to work on creating an interdisciplinary active learning module aligned with systemic science reform.  

The second part of this workshop will enable faculty to work in collaborative teams to develop a module based on current curriculum content within and across disciplines in entry level science classes.  Participants will meet in teams to work on developing a lesson module.  The participants will have the opportunity to field test the module in their classes.

This training is designed to improve the student success in science through increased faculty use of active learning strategies and critical thinking skills that link science courses through real life applications.

Objectives

 As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Define active learning
• Identify ways to incorporate active learning strategies into a science course
• Design lessons that integrate active learning strategies into the science classes
• Apply active learning strategy to specific learning situations
• Assess the Active learning strategies developed
• Field test the modules in the classroom
• Plan for additional module to be created
• Share and explore modules created by each team

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop) 

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
