Workshop: ChemDraw Ultra

Course ID - CTD0421-9

Short Title: ChemDraw Ultra

 Audience     Faculty
Length of Workshop:        6 hours (2 workshop hours and 4 Post workshop hours)
Prerequisite

* Approved CT&D Workshop for Faculty Professional Development hours.

Description:
This workshop will provide training on the ChemDraw Ultra software. This software program is a molecule editor developed by the Cheminformatics Company CambridgeSoft. This program will allow faculty to create and modify representations of chemical structures. Molecular drawing programs, such as this one, are used to generate two dimensional (flat) representations of molecules and chemical reactions that can by used as illustrations or for querying chemical databases. The programs features include the following Rich polymer notation, generic structure expansion, fragmentation tools, and a modern user interface. In addition, it will allow large numbers of molecules to be modified automatically.
The participants will prepare a lesson plan to demonstrate how they incorporate the ChemDraw software into their lesson plans.  Rubric- The lesson plan will be evaluated by Dr. Qianhui Zhang for mastery of objectives, and each participant will receive professional development credit based upon completion of a satisfactory lesson plan.
Participants will have three weeks to turn in their assignment.

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Create tables of structures
  • Identify and label stereochemistry
  • Obtain structures from chemical names
  • Assign names from structures
  • Create multi-page documents and posters
  • Create precise database queries by specifying atom and bond properties and stereochemistry
  • Convert ChemDraw and ISIS/Draw sketches into 3D models
  • View molecular surfaces, orbitals, electrostatic potentials, charge densities and spindensities
  • Create chemically knowledgeable spreadsheets within the familiar Microsoft Excel environment

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.

If you need special assistance to participate in this workshop due to a disability, please call CT&D at 7-2366 so that appropriate arrangements can be made.  College Training and Development complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
