Description:
In this workshop, faculty will examine the service-learning pedagogy,
identifying ways to integrate both the theory and the experience into
teacher education courses, and into student teaching. Faculty will
consider how to determine their specific rationale for implementation,
and review each of the steps (from points of entry to assessment) and
elements of a high quality service-learning practice, including
integrated learning, authentic appropriate assessment methods.
They will review children's and young adult literature that can be used
to inspire K-12 students to social action.

Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:
- Design a service-learning component to
a teacher education course that incorporates the pedagogy including
the stages of a high quality practice
- Determine the specific rationale for
service-learning that parallels and enriches course objectives
- Integrate the essential elements of
service-learning into the pedagogy and student experience and
practice, including integrated learning, authentic needs,
reciprocity, collaboration, civic responsibility, youth voice, and
reflection as fundamental components of the service-learning
experience
- Model an assessment process that can
be implemented during student teaching experiences
- Structure service-learning experiences
for students
- Incorporate children's literature into
service-learning strategies

How to Register
Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and
Registration system. The process for registering for a CTD
workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.
You can access the Registration System and register
for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to
login to your computer. Example: Richard
Johnson would be rjohnson (You will
NOT
need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD
workshop)
Make a note of the Reference Number for the
workshop then go to
Registration Instructions
Once you have registered for a class, you can print your
schedule. Please make every effort to attend once
you've registered as seats are limited.
However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web
Registration screen. CTD classes will
appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
If you need special assistance to
