Short Title: Seamless Transitions

Length of Workshop:        6 hours  (4 hrs F2F & 2 hrs in between workshop)

To improve communication among English for Academic Purposes (EAP), College Preparatory and English & Communications departments, faculty will share information regarding syllabi, instructional materials, course competencies, and assessment methods.  This session will initiate the dialogue to conduct "curriculum mapping" among four programs: EAP, College Prep, English and Speech.

First Session (2 hours)

This session will focus on sharing information about the four programs: EAP, College Prep, English and Speech. A panel made up of faculty from these four areas will present information on courses competencies, instructional materials, assessment methods, and expectations each discipline has regarding its students.  There will be time for questions and answers after the panelistsí presentation. Participants will be placed into eight interdisciplinary groups of six for a hands-on, working session to begin brainstorming a product: the development of best-practice methods for successful advancement of students into next level of courses.

Inter-Session Work (2 hours)

Each interdisciplinary group will engage in multiple steps to develop and present a best practice. These steps will entail brainstorming, selecting strategy, outlining, developing presentation, revising/refining. Each group will share a best-practice via PowerPoint with the entire group during the second session.

Second Session (2 hours)

Each of the eight interdisciplinary groups will present the product it has devised, reflecting an effective practice in EAP/CP/ENC that facilitates a seamless transition from one discipline to the other. After all the presentations, there will be a period of discussion and feedback for possible refining of product (s). Products will be made available on websites of the three departments and will be used in the orientation and training of adjunct faculty.


As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe course competencies in different discipline areas 
  • List and describe assessment methods used in various courses
  • Identify and describe instructional materials used in various courses
  • Identify students' expectation in each discipline (i.e. students entering ENC 1101 should...........)
  • Devise and explain best practice methods to facilitate student's seamless transition from EAP to College Prep to English and Communication courses

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
