Workshop: Global Sustainability & Earth Literacy

Short Title: Global/Earth Lit.

Length of Workshop:       10 hours ( 7 F2F and 3 post workshop hours) 

* Approved CT&D Workshop for Faculty Professional Development hours.

This day long symposium will focus on key components of global Sustainability and Earth Literacy that impact Sustainability Education. In addition, the symposium will address how we frame communities and necessary skills and challenges that are needed to bring about more sustainable and healthy environments. Members of the Earth Ethics Institute National Advisory Board will facilitate the symposium.

Plan of Evaluation: Participants will choose from among 3 assignments. Option 1 - Design a collaborative, interdisciplinary project that helps students learn the concepts of Global Sustainability and Earth Literacy while creating communities of engagement.  Option 2 - Develop a lesson plan incorporating global sustainability and Earth Literacy concerns.  Option 3: Develop a presentation for a Sustainability Symposium intended for a student audience.  Whichever option is chosen will be due to the EEI Director within three weeks of the date of the symposium.


As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the elegance and intelligence of the Universal Earth process
  • Describe the philosophy of governance and law which recognizes that the Earth, not human interest, is primary
  • Identify how the Earth Charter is a statement of Ethical Principles to bring about sustainable communities
  • Evaluate the importance of experiential learning, the awareness of community, and all that support it
  • Describe how assessing a community's wisdom and strengths can help create communities of true value
  • Explain how sustainable development and warming climate requires changes that should be implemented in our cities and educational institutions
  • Relate systemic thinking and policy change to education and action for sustainable future in the context of a variety of disciplines
  • Integrate civic engagement opportunities regarding sustainability into courses
  • View Global Sustainability and Earth Literacy as interdisciplinary

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
