Workshop: Strategies for Critical Thinking in the ESL Classroom

Course ID - CTD0495

Short Title: Critical Thinking

Audience:       ESL Faculty
Length of Workshop:        3 hours
Prerequisite     none

Our students need to do more than simply pass tests of their comprehension and grammatical skill.  They need to be challenged to think and act beyond the text.  This interactive workshop will provide an overview of challenging critical thinking strategies for ESL teachers to use in their classrooms and focus on the centrality of questions in teaching and learning.  We will also see many examples of critical thinking tasks in language development activities.  In the final segment of the workshop, participants will examine raw texts and transform them into critical thinking activities for use in their ESL classrooms.

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Design lesson plans that incorporate critical thinking tasks
  • Develop flexible strategies for teaching reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Describe teaching strategies that promote the use of integrated skills
  • Access teacher resources and supplementary teaching materials
