| Audience: |
Faculty,
Staff, Administrators |
| Length
of Workshop: |
3.5
hours |
| Prerequisite |

Description:
South Florida
classrooms seem an obvious place to promote the use of solar power, but
few institutions are doing so in practice. This program demystifies the
technology for faculty and makes clear the best ways to utilize solar,
how to design various sized systems, how to make a solar installation
accessible and affordable, and finally, how to apply for permitting,
select approved systems, and obtain available rebates. Suggestions for
how to use these concepts to create productive, hands-on learning
experiences for students will be provided both during the workshop and
on an instructional CD that will be distributed to all participants.
* Approved CT&D Workshop for Faculty Professional
Development hours.
Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:
-
Describe how
changing to renewable energy sources can drastically reduce CO2
emissions and minimize our dependence on fossil fuels
-
Describe the
components of various sized solar systems, their applications, and
their costs
-
Describe the
role of architects, engineers and policy-makers in determining how
energy will be produced and consumed
-
Explain how to
calculate the economics of solar energy at various scale
applications
-
Design classroom
activities that allow students to apply an understanding of life
cycle cost analysis (determining how long it takes for a system to
"pay for itself"), tax free return on an investment, and the impact
of federal tax credits and state rebate programs
-
Design classroom
activities that allow students to apply an understanding of how
solar energy systems can provide a long-term sustainable solution to
the problem of diminishing fossil fuel resources
-
Explain the
impact of government policy on energy production and consumption
