Description:
The primary
purpose of this Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication Skills
workshop is to discover the importance of effective communication and be
sure that the message is what they really want to communicate and is
sensitive to all members of our diverse society. The outcome is to be
"conscious communicators" who anticipate the impact on others of the
message they want to send. In our diverse society, the need for greater
sensitivity and adaptability in working effectively with people from
different backgrounds is of paramount importance. In an effort to help
develop successful communication strategies in a diverse environment,
this workshop will use discussion and interactive activities to look at
how the way we communicate affects all of our daily contacts.
Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:

Understand the
characteristics of effective and politically sensitive communicators

Increase their
understanding of how their behavior impacts others and the way
others respond to them

Choose words that
are appropriate for a particular situation

Explain how
prejudices affect communication

Apply some
techniques regarding how to deal with critical incidents caused by
intercultural misunderstandings
-
Demonstrate more
effective communication skills with people of other backgrounds

How to Register
Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and
Registration system. The process for registering for a CTD
workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.
You can access the Registration System and register
for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to
login to your computer. Example: Richard
Johnson would be rjohnson (You will
NOT
need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD
workshop)
Make a note of the Reference Number for the
workshop then go to
Registration Instructions
Once you have registered for a class, you can print your
schedule. Please make every effort to attend once
you've registered as seats are limited.
However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web
Registration screen. CTD classes will
appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
If you need special assistance to
participate in this workshop due to a disability, please call CT&D at
7-2366 so that appropriate arrangements can be made. College
