Workshop: Academic Coaching and Mentoring


Description

CTD0559a Academic Coaching and Mentoring  provides the information and skill-building practice to prepare faculty, staff and administrators to engage in the academic coaching and mentoring of students who have achieved the 25 percent benchmark of program completion (15 college-level credits). Participants will take part in a combination of face-to-face, online and advisor-shadowing activities that presents a comprehensive understanding of academic coaching and mentoring.

 

Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the framework for collaborative coaching and mentoring of MDC students
  • Identify the characteristics of an effective academic coach and mentor
  • Apply best practices for communicating with students and building rapport
  • Navigate the faculty view in Odyssey to obtain, review and input student data
  • Utilize an IEP to help students plan their coursework
  • Guide students to resources that help them transfer successfully into a baccalaureate program
  • Identify college resources such as ACCESS, tutoring, and scholarships

Faculty Professional Development (FPD) Credit:  This course is worth 10 hours of FPD credit.

Training Format: The training is being offered in a blended format. The first 2 hours of training will take place online and must be completed before the face-to-face (F2F) session. Your instructor will email you login instructions when the course opens. The online training is followed by 4 hours of face-to-face instruction. After the online and face-to-face training have been completed, 4 additional shadowing hours will be required with a Student Services Peer on your campus.
