Short Title: ESL for Officers      

Description:
This is a 3-step English conversation program for security officers at MDC where students will learn language structures and vocabulary needed in daily situations. The program will be broken down into the following components: ESL with ELLIS interactive language training software: The program will begin with a 2 hour orientation lesson to cover software and basic computer use. There will be an electronic placement test of approximately 45-60 minutes in duration to place students into the appropriate level. The student will attend a minimum of 20 hours in the language lab which will be self-guided and will cover grammar, listening, dictation, speaking and accent reduction. Total required time: 23 hours.

Workplace Readiness Skills: Selected competencies will be taught from the VESOL A program. The competencies will be delivered in English by an instructor for a total of 20 hours. Vocabulary Development for Security Officers: 20 hours of vocabulary specific to that used by security officers will be taught according to the situations encountered in their daily jobs. These will be learned through role plays, pair work, problem posing/solving and total physical response activities. Students will also practice filling out the MDC incident report.

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Correctly identify aurally and produce orally developed vocabulary and phrases
• Employ vocabulary specific to MDC Security Officers in common situations
• Correctly filling out the MDC incident report
• Effectively maintain intermediate conversations in English

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop) 

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
