The "Advising Continuing Students" workshop will familiarize attendees with how to advise a continuing student. This will include skills, tips and strategies when dealing with this population.


As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define “continuing” student
  • Explain the Degree Audit
  • Explain how a Degree Audit is different than a transcript
  • Define “continuous enrollment”
  • Explain what “requirements as of” or “effective term” date mean
  • Identify older course #’s that may be used as substitutes for current requirements
  • Explain when re-testing is required
  • Use Odyssey to record their advisement of an individual student
  • Explain Graduation Requirements
  • Explain “15 of the last 30 credits” and what it means toward graduation
  • Define prerequisites for a program
  • Find the prerequisites for a program
  • Create an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP)
  • Describe alternative methods of instruction
  • Explain why a student cannot receive two A.A. degrees
  • Explain why a student can receive two A.S. degrees
  • Explain what to do if a student already has a Bachelor’s degree
  • Identify the advantages of earning an A.A. degree vs. transferring before the degree is awarded
  • Define a “transient” student
  • Explain the career services resources and tools available for students

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
