This workshop will provide an overview of the daily responsibilities and tasks performed by Advisement and Career services college-wide. This is not a "how to advise" session, but instead an opportunity to learn what Advisement and Career Services does in performing its dual role of academic and career advisement and how it relates to the Student Services division as a whole. 

 

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the academic planning services Advisement and Career Services provides for FTIC (First-Time-In-College), undeclared, and students in SOAP categories as well as the career planning and employment development services provided to all students  
  • Explain the various formats in which the academic and career services are provided
  • Explain the importance of choosing a major and refer students for major changes
  • Explain the course substitution process
  • Identify student registration problems
  • Explain the graduation application process
  • Identify liaisons for academic areas
  • Explain the transfer process
  • Explain the advantages of establishing an Individual Education Plan
  • Explain the benefits of graduating before transferring vs. transferring without an A.A. degree
  • Explain how various technologies are used in the academic and career advisement process
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration between staff/faculty and Advisement and Career Services
  • Identify where faculty and staff can obtain academic and career advisement training as well as additional sources of information

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
