Workshop: Speech Discipline Program Assessment Retreat

Length of Workshop:       8 hours (6 face-to-face and 2 post workshop)

Review of discipline rubrics and the program learning outcomes assessments conducted by faculty last academic year. Examination of classrooms best practices and completion of at least two plans for incorporation into future learning outcomes assessment processes.
A survey will be completed assessing the degree to which participants can fulfill the workshop objectives, including identifying strategies and assignments to be implemented which support course competencies and are linked to forms of program assessment to be used in the discipline.
In addition, each participant will write a one page position paper exploring appropriate assessment strategies including writing assignments which can be implemented in SPC1017 courses to increase the students' abilities to demonstrate attainment of course competencies and learning objectives.
This position paper shall be submitted to the faculty convener within two weeks of the workshop (no later than March 23), and anonymous excerpts may become part of the Program Assessment Team's data repository


As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify program learning outcomes for the Speech Discipline, and their relationship to SPC1017 and SPC2608 course competencies 
  • Describe appropriate direct and indirect assessment measures which can be applied in the classroom to further improve student learning
  • Evaluate how technology available through learning resources can support classroom instruction and assessment
  • Devise a three assessment plan for which at least two Speech Discipline learning outcomes will be drafted
  • Identify forms of data collection for program assessment to be used by the discipline
  • Examine current rubrics and adapt them as tools for evaluation of student speeches

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
