Workshop:  Teaching Strategies For Librarian Lectures

Course ID - CTD0446

Short Title:  Librarian Strategies

(Course ID, Reference #, or Keyword title can be used to find and register for this course in Odyssey)

Audience:   Library Faculty
Length of Workshop:    8 hours
Prerequisite None

Description: Library faculty must teach library research skills in classroom settings, along with the one-on-one instruction librarians traditionally deliver at the library reference desk. However, many librarians have never received formal instruction in classroom teaching.  Even those librarians who have been taught "how to teach" find that knowledge inappropriate for the "one-shot" guest lecture format through which librarians usually deliver their library instruction.

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics on M-DC students
  • Describe strategies that can be used to get to know your students
  • Use the principles of adult learning to guide their selection of teaching and learning techniques that put students at the center of their teaching
  • Explain the impact of culture and diversity in instruction
  • Explain the various types of student learning styles
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the various new techniques and innovations in their courses to facilitate learning
  • Analyze their classroom environment
  • Design and deliver instruction appropriate for both instructor and learner using  technology as an enhancement
  • Create learning outcomes and teaching strategies to initiate, excite, and encourage learning
  • Apply various classroom management techniques
  • Apply various modes and levels of technology into the curriculum
  • Describe the challenges as well as the innovations for integrating technology in the classroom in providing effective learning
  • Apply the Law of Service to psychological, instructional and physical learning environments to enhance the learning process
  • Explain the importance of clear and effective communication in the educational process
  • Explain various ways to present information (PowerPoint)
  • Analyze and evaluate various suggestions and innovations for improving the educational climate
