Description: The course will cover history of the Biscayne National Park and surrounding areas, and an overview of local ecosystems including shoreline to reef line, upland habitats of off-shore islands, inshore seagrass and mangrove forest communities. Canoes will be used to explore mangrove areas and observe their micro-communities, and visits to a flood control structure and a water quality laboratory will be made. Resource management case studies will be presented related to the nearby landfill (Mount Trashmore Turkey Point power plant, Homestead Airforce Base, Stiltsville, Lobster sanctuary, natural and artificial reefs, the North American Crocodile, and the Schaus Swallowtail. Participants will be expected to relate the workshop experience to their discipline and develop ways to incorporate concepts of ecological sustainability into their current course objectives.

Objectives

 As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Develop knowledge of the effects of our current resources use on ecological systems by reviewing a variety of case studies and participating in related field observation
  • Develop value of usable water resources by touting a water quality laboratory
  • Develop knowledge of sources of water pollution by listening to a presentation by a park superintendent
  • Develop an understanding of adverse impacts of development by participating in discussion about case studies of Homestead Airforce Base, coastal power plants, coastal high rises, communication towers, landfills and large offshore vessels
  • Develop an understanding of biodiversity, food webs, full-cost accounting/economics, aesthetics, ethics and spirituality
  • Develop values of ecological sustainability by experiencing a Green Studies Immersion Workshop
  • Develop enthusiasm for integrating principles of sustainability into curriculum by realizing and identifying connections between humans and the natural world

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop)  The first time you log in to the Registration Page, you will be asked to accept the Use of Computing Resources at Miami Dade College.    The Accept button is located at the bottom of the screen.

PLEASE NOTE:  You do not have to create a student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop.  You can use your regular network login name and password proceeded by the MDCC\   
  1. Go to the MDC Registration Page.
  2. Choose the Term from the dropdown menu.
  3. Enter your PIN number (If you don't remember your PIN, you can reset it by clicking the Update My Pin button.)
  4. Click the  myMDC  Log In button.
  5. Log in  using your regular username and password.  Your username must be proceeded by the MDCC\

ex.   Joe Smith would login in with

User name -  mdcc\jsmith and his regular password.

Once logged in, you should use Speed Registration.  You must know the Reference number for the workshop you want to take.   You can still  search for workshops using the Course ID or Short title, if you click on Shopping Cart.    The best way to register is by  Reference number.

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
