Description: In this six-hour professional development workshop, concepts of Humane Education will be explored as well as ways to incorporate these across disciplines on the Community College Level. Through lecture, discussion and assignments, participants will critically examine a number of perspectives regarding social trends, animals, environment, culture and education; assess existing course material; and develop appropriate class objectives, lesson plans and/or activities that encourage or build qualities of character such as compassion, respect and social responsibility.

Objectives

  As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Examine various perspectives and values of humane education
  • Examine the correlation between cruelty and violence by humans toward other animals, and cruelty and violence by humans toward other humans
  • Identify speciesist perceptions and determine the extent to which, and to whom, they may be detrimental
  • Compare pre-and post-World War II environmental, economic and global conditions, and assess the implications for past, present and future needs in education
  • Identify possible psychological and physiological affects of facing a degraded, inhumane world
  • Examine ways one can empower one's self through appropriate, humane action
  • Assess the benefits of including values of compassion, respect and social responsibility across college curriculum

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop)  The first time you log in to the Registration Page, you will be asked to accept the Use of Computing Resources at Miami Dade College.    The Accept button is located at the bottom of the screen.

PLEASE NOTE:  You do not have to create a student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop.  You can use your regular network login name and password proceeded by the MDCC\   
  1. Go to the MDC Registration Page.
  2. Choose the Term from the dropdown menu.
  3. Enter your PIN number (If you don't remember your PIN, you can reset it by clicking the Update My Pin button.)
  4. Click the  myMDC  Log In button.
  5. Log in  using your regular username and password.  Your username must be proceeded by the MDCC\

ex.   Joe Smith would login in with

User name -  mdcc\jsmith and his regular password.

Once logged in, you should use Speed Registration.  You must know the Reference number for the workshop you want to take.   You can still  search for workshops using the Course ID or Short title, if you click on Shopping Cart.    The best way to register is by  Reference number.

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
