PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING GUIDELINES
The listings below for required College Training and Development courses by job category were designed to assist supervisors in determining appropriate workshops to recommend to their employees. These listings should not be read from the perspective that this is the only training that employees will need. Rather, the workshops listed will provide baseline skills, knowledge and abilities, and when added to the required education and qualifications for entry to the particular job category, should equip individuals to carry out their functions in a satisfactory way.
These baseline skills, knowledge and abilities should be viewed as the requirements for the new employee. If individuals in the identified groups already possess the skills, knowledge and abilities developed through the workshops, they do not need to attend. If a veteran employee does not have the skills, knowledge or abilities covered in the training, then the supervisor would be wise in recommending attendance to develop the needed competencies. Supervisors should work with employees on an individual basis to develop an “individual development plan.” Just as supervisors set performance expectations each year, they should also set expectations for training that will promote satisfactory job performance. Unless otherwise indicated, the timeframe for completion of the required training core is one year.
Workshops are listed in the order in which they should be taken within a given category. For further detail on each workshop, please refer to the CT&D Workshop Catalog . Once an individual is functioning at baseline, College Training and Development has many other workshops and on-line tutorials that will enhance job performance. The CT&D Workshop Catalog lists many different workshops that are offered on an on-going basis. When departments or areas have unique training needs that are not addressed in these on-going workshops, CT&D can design and tailor training to fit the need.
Employees want to be successful and to perform well in their functions. The frustration of not knowing how to do one’s job is felt at every level from the new department secretary who does not know how to make a purchase through Odyssey to the new Department Chair who has never supervised faculty and does not know how to set performance expectations or give feedback. The training programs offered through College Training and Development are designed to develop the essential skills, knowledge and abilities that Miami-Dade employees need to successfully perform their jobs.
