MDC to Participate in Emergency Training Exercise with Members of the Southeast Regional Domestic Security Task Force July 29, 2009
MDC is the only institution of higher education playing a role in the drill. More than 200 students will also participate as actors.Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.
Miami, July 28, 2009 - Miami Dade College (MDC) will participate in an emergency training exercise in collaboration with first responders from the Southeast Regional Domestic Security Task Force (SERDSTF) on Wed., July 29, 2009, between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
The objective of the event will be to test the region’s resources, response and capabilities to mitigate a SIMULATED threat by a FICTITIOUS terrorist group directed at multiple locations throughout South Florida. The exercise has been dubbed “Operation Cassandra.”
The event in Miami-Dade County will involve a simulated terror attack on a downtown Miami venue.
There is no planned disruption of traffic related to this exercise, but there will be a significant visible presence of law enforcement, fire rescue and other emergency responders in the area immediately adjacent to Bicentennial Park and the American Airlines Arena.
MDC is the only institution of higher education participating in this exercise. The college will use the scenario from Operation Cassandra to test and validate the latest version of its emergency plan during a tabletop exercise simulating the activation of the Wolfson Campus Crisis Management Team.
Also, more than 200 current MDC students have volunteered to serve as role-players for tomorrow's exercise at Bicentennial Park and area hospitals.
These MDC volunteers will provide first responders the opportunity to treat simulated casualties and implement emergency procedures in a realistic, but safe environment.
