Any student who has a documented disability. Documentation includes an evaluation by a licensed or certified professional such as a physician, a psychologist, an audiologist, a learning disabilities specialist, etc. A disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual. These could include visual, hearing, speech impairments; cerebral palsy; epilepsy; cancer; heart disease; diabetes; specific learning disabilities such as mathematics disorder; HIV-related illness, and substance abuse disorders.

WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE?

Depending upon documentation provided, students may be eligible for a note-taker, a reader, or a sign language interpreter. Our Labs are equipped with the latest in adaptive technology and software programs. These can accommodate the needs of students with vision or hearing impairments or students with learning disabilities. In some cases, students may be eligible for extra time on exams, course substitutions or waivers of particular tests. The ACCESS department also provides Resource Advisors to guide and advise, make referrals to other agencies, and in some cases train students to learn special strategies or skills that enhance academic success. The department works to assist students with disabilities to fully participate in the educational and social activities of the college.
