Dual Enrollment Guide / Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be enrolled at Miami Dade College to participate in the Dual Enrollment Guided Pathways Program?
Yes, all participants must be enrolled at Miami Dade College (MDC) as dual enrollment students.
What if my GPA and test scores aren't high enough for regular dual enrollment? Can I still take college courses?
Yes! If your GPA and test scores aren't high enough for regular dual enrollment, you can still take college courses through the COLLEGE CONNECT Program. High school students with a 2.5 unweighted GPA who don't meet the usual eligibility requirements can enroll in these courses. You can take up to 12 credits before you need to demonstrate college readiness in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Middle school students must meet the 3.0 GPA requirement and pass all 3 sections of the college placement examination.
Can I receive credit for completing a high school academy if I graduated from high school more than a year ago?
If your MDC degree program is aligned to your previously completed High School Academy, please submit a Career Pathways Credit Request for MDC’s Office of Prior Learning Assessment to evaluate.
How do I know what High School Academies are at my school?
Visit MDC’s Career Pathway Program website for information on your school's high school academies and the credit awards you can earn towards your degree at MDC by completing an academy.
Is it possible to follow a guided pathway if my school does not offer the high school academy program?
Yes! High school students who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for MDC’s Dual Enrollment Program, which allows them to pursue any of the guided pathways described in this manual.
Would I be able to use my Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Courses in place of a dual enrollment course?
Yes! High school students who earn credit through AP, IB, and Cambridge AICE can use these courses in place of the recommended and equivalent dual enrollment courses. MDC has established additional course substitutions for each pathway in these cases.
How do I receive college credit for completing all required courses in my high school academy?
After high school, enroll at MDC in a degree program that matches your career academy and submit a Career Pathways Credit Request for evaluation by MDC’s Office of Prior Learning Assessment.
Do I receive dual enrollment credit for the work I complete if I decide to switch pathways?
Yes! The dual enrollment credits that students earn at MDC count toward high school graduation and can also be applied to a college degree or certificate.
Can I use this Guided Pathways Manual if I begin dual enrollment courses in my sophomore, junior, or senior year in high school?
Yes! This resource was designed with an understanding that NOT all students begin dual enrollment courses during their freshman year.
Can I use credit earned for completion of a high school academy towards a different college degree program?
It depends on whether the credits earned are required for your new degree program. To determine this, please schedule an appointment with an MDC Academic Advisor.
