Selection Categories

Poetry or Prose

Poem or prose selection, 1 to 3 minutes in length including the introduction, transitions and the rendition. Only one selection may be used. Selections should be written by authors of African descent. Teachers should give preference to selecting pieces written by authors of African descent, however, any selection relating to the African experience and/or civil and human rights is acceptable.

Original Works

A 1 to 3 minute original selection written by the student.

Published Oratory

A 1 to 3 minute published speech that is relevant to the civil/human rights struggle.

Dramatic Monologue

A 1 to 3 minute performance piece, including the introduction and recitation. Teachers should give preference to selecting pieces written by authors of African descent, however, any selection relating to the African experience and/or civil and human rights is acceptable.

Advocacy (High School Students Only)

Students are required to research a problem, identify a solution(s), extol the benefit(s) and/or burdens of the topic, and make an effective and compelling speech advocating or denouncing a legislative, business, educational or societal issue. Three (3) minutes only.

Note: All selections must indicate the name and author, including "original works".
