 MARIEL 25

  // History

On April 1, 1980, a bus crashed the gates of the Peruvian Embassy in Havana; within days, thousands crowded the site, seeking asylum. So began the Mariel boatlift, a time of wrenching departures and confusing arrivals, of upheaval and adjustment, during which more than 125,000 Cubans made the journey to South Florida. Twenty-five years later, Miami Dade College celebrates the wealth that Mariel brought to our shores with a series of events.
