The Library provides books, magazines, journals, newspapers, CD-ROMs, videos, online databases, and other materials for your research needs. In addition to our collection, we offer one-on-one reference assistance and classes in research strategies and skills.

Code of Ethics for Midwives


Midwives in all aspects of professional relationships will:

Respect basic human rights and the dignity of all persons

Respect their own self worth, dignity, and professional integrity

Midwives in all aspects of their professional practice will:

Develop a partnership with the woman in which each shares relevant information that leads to informed decision making, consent to an evolving plan of care, and acceptance of responsibility for the outcomes of their choices.

Act without discrimination based on factors such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, lifestyle, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, or nature of the health problem.

Provide an environment where privacy is protected and in which all pertinent information is shared without bias, coercion, or deception.

Maintain confidentiality except where disclosure is mandated by law.

Maintain the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed for competence.

Protect women, their families, and colleagues from harmful, unethical, or
incompetent practices by taking appropriate action that may include reporting
as mandated by law.


Midwives as members of a profession will:

Promote, advocate for, and strive to protect the rights, health, and well-being of women, families, and communities.

Promote just distribution of resources and equity in access to quality health services.

Promote and support the education of midwifery students and peers, standards of practice,
research, and policies that enhance the health of women, families, and communities.

American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM)

What you will find: provides a midwife directory, continuing education opportunities, scholarship and other award opportunities, job opportunities, and information for consumers.

International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)

What you will find: hosts an annual meeting and provides comprehensive information and resources for the midwife.

Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA)

What you will find: provides regular conferences and workshops and other information and resources pertinent to midwives.

Midwives Association of Florida (MAF)

What you will find: a statewide organization that provides resources and general information about a career in midwifery.

North American Registry of Midwives (NARM)

What you will find: establishes and administers certifications for the credential "Certified Professional Midwife" (CPM). Provides information about the examination and about recertification.

 
Critical Thinking


What is critical thinking: Beyond merely retrieving information, critical thinking involves the ability to reason, process and evaluate information, using it to problem solve and reach accurate conclusions.

How to evaluate information: Critically evaluating information is imperative, especially in the health fields, as it could potentially affect the health of the information consumer. Following are a few sites that will aid you in critically evaluating health information:

Health Information Literacy

What you will find: a powerpoint that will aid you in identifying quality health education materials written at various literacy levels, in various formats and in other languages; help you in limiting your use of medical jargon; assist you in instructing consumers/patients to evaluate health education materials for authority, currency, and bias; and help you improve communication skills with your co-workers.

Medical Library Association (MLA):Content Evaluation Guidelines

What you will find: poses four sets of questions on which to evaluate the content of a website.

The Health on the Net (HON) Foundation:
HON Code of Conduct (HONcode) for medical and health web sites

What you will find:
defines a set of rules to hold medical and health web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of their information. You may search to determine if particular websites have obtained the HONcode seal.

Using case studies to practice your critical thinking skills:  Case studies present fictional medical situations that enable the learner to practice critical problem solving in a controlled environment without the threat of endangering a patient's health. What you will find: provides health standards, regulations, and inspections to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths.

Students are admitted to the Midwifery Program in August of each year. A total of ninety (90) credits must be completed for an Associate in Science degree.
