Ask-a-Librarian
The Miami Dade College Libraries participate in a statewide collaborative
project called Ask-a-Librarian.
This free "virtual reference" service offers the opportunity to communicate with
librarians via e-mail or live chat. The live chat component (which operates
Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday
from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) includes a
co-browsing feature that allows librarians to "escort" users to various online
resources. Ask-a-Librarian is a joint project between Florida's
College Center
for Library Automation and the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. |

Borrowing Privileges
All full time employees of the
College have library borrowing privileges. Part time
employees, including adjunct
faculty, must renew their borrowing privileges each semester by presenting a letter from
their supervisor or Department Chairperson verifying current employment.
A valid College ID is required for checking out
materials, and may be used for borrowing privileges at the
libraries of all
community colleges and publicly funded
state universities in Florida. |
| Collection
Development Kendall Campus faculty
members are encouraged to
participate in library collection development by suggesting titles
for purchase and/or making recommendations for the withdrawal of
materials that are no longer useful.
Recommendations for the
purchase of new materials may be made by contacting the
librarian assigned to your discipline. For selection guidelines, see
the College-wide
Collection Development Policy.
Textbooks used in MDC
courses are not normally purchased for the library
collection, but faculty members may arrange to have copies of
textbooks placed on reserve.
Book donations may be made by contacting
Barbara Joy at (305)
237-2072, or Helena Gomez at (305) 237-2298. |
| Credit Courses
Faculty members may wish to advise students of the
availability of the following electives:
LIS1001: Introduction to Library Research

Interlibrary Loan Books or articles that are not owned by the Kendall Campus Library may be
obtained from other campuses or institutions via Interlibrary
Loan (ILL). MDC students or employees may visit the Reference and
Information Services Desk on the second floor of building 2, or call (305)
237-2077 or (305) 237-2292 for assistance with placing ILL
requests.
Items that can be obtained from libraries within Florida's Community
College System are usually received within 3 to 7 days. Other items may take up
to 2 weeks to be received.
The borrower is notified when a requested item becomes available for pick-up
at the Circulation/Reserve Desk. The loan period for the item
depends on the policy of the owning institution. |

Information Literacy
Miami Dade College's
ten
General Education Learning Outcomes include information
literacy (outcome #4), which refers to an individual's ability
to "formulate strategies to locate,
evaluate, and apply information." (Click
here for a more detailed definition of information literacy.)
The MDC Libraries are
committed to facilitating the incorporation of information literacy
into the College curriculum. Faculty members in all
disciplines are encouraged to:
-
Schedule their
classes for a library instruction session.
-
Partner with a
librarian to form a learning community with
LIS 1001
(Introduction to Library Research), or to have a librarian
embedded in a course.
-
Attend a
CT&D
workshop on information literacy (and earn professional
development credit!)

Library Instruction
The purpose of library instruction is to familiarize students with the
library, and to enable them to retrieve and evaluate information from a variety
of authoritative resources. Hands-on instruction sessions are
conducted by faculty librarians in the library's Electronic Classroom (room 2253),
or in your classroom, by
appointment. If desired, the content of
the session can be tailored to meet the specific information needs
of your students. You may choose to have your students complete the
Library
Assignment to reinforce the concepts presented in the session.
To schedule a library instruction session, complete the
online request form, or contact
Laurie Hime at (305) 237-2295.
Faculty members are also encouraged to
consider partnering with a librarian to form a learning community
with LIS1001 (Introduction to Library Research), or to have a
librarian embedded in a course. |
|
Library Faculty Liaison Program
The purpose of
the Library Faculty Liaison Program is to facilitate collaboration
with faculty in the various academic departments in developing the
library's collection. A representative from each department is
partnered with a member of the library faculty to identify needed
resources and evaluate the collection in specific subject areas. Faculty members wishing to make recommendations concerning the
library's collection are encouraged to
contact their department liaison, or the librarian assigned to their
discipline.

LINCCWeb LINCCWeb is a powerful
research tool that provides 24/7 access to a variety of
information resources. The Borrower ID for
logging into LINCCWeb is the MDC student or employee number.
The
PIN is the last 4 digits
of the MDC student or employee number.
LINCCWeb consists of:
- The
LINCC Catalog, which includes the holdings of
the MDC Libraries and all the libraries in Florida's
Community College System. You do not have to be
logged into LINCCWeb to search the LINCC Catalog,
but logging in allows you to use some of the
catalog's additional features, such as placing
online requests for materials from other
institutions.
- A variety of
LINCCWeb Databases, many offering full text
content from journals, magazines, newspapers, and
other types of information resources.
- Your
LINCCWeb Account, which allows you to see what
library materials are currently checked out to you,
renew your books online, and view any outstanding
library obligations.
