STUDENTS WITH LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY SEEKING ASSOCIATE DEGREES OR COLLEGE CREDIT CERTIFICATE

Students without sufficient English proficiency to take the CPT/PERT are required to take an MDC approved English proficiency placement test (COMPASS/ESL) and be placed in the designated English as a Second Language (English for Academic Purposes [EAP]) course. This includes students with foreign degrees that were earned from an accredited institution where the official language of instruction is not English. CPT/PERT testing is required following COMPASS/ESL testing and/or completion of EAP courses.

Who is required to take an English proficiency placement test?
  • All students who graduated from a non-English speaking high school.

  • All students who took ESOL during their eleventh or twelfth grade years at any English speaking high school.

  • All students who earned a GED in Spanish.

  • All students who took an MDC approved English proficiency placement test more than one year ago and whose scores were not used for placement decisions.

  • Students transitioning from EDU 070, EDU 058, or EDU 064 to degree or Allied Health college credit certificate programs are required to take an MDC approved English proficiency placement test in order to determine eligibility.

Who is exempt from taking an English proficiency placement test?

When should EAP students take the CPT/PERT?

EAP Level 6 students may take the CPT/PERT for placement purposes after the “W” date of the term. The college’s retesting procedure applies for any subsequent testing.

NOTE:

  • EAP students who are taking the Reading and Writing subtests for their first time must also take the CPT/PERT math subtest if the math placement area indicates that testing is required.
  • Exceptions to testing EAP students could be made at the chairperson’s discretion.

What are the retest procedures for COMPASS/ESL?

COMPASS/ESL scores are valid for one year. If a student does not use these scores for course placement during that time, the student will be required to take the test again. Students may retest once on COMPASS/ESL for initial placement. Retesting of the complete battery of tests must occur prior to enrollment or by the 100% refund date each semester. Students who have already begun EAP instruction may only be referred for retesting on an individual basis by the department chairperson. Scores are no longer valid for placement after the one-year period; therefore, students may retake the test.
